Serengeti migration
The Serengeti migration is considered as one of the “seven new wonders of the world.” The migration is the annual movement of approximately 1.5 million wildebeest, 550,000 zebras and a smattering of 300,000 impalas, Thomson’s gazelles and elands. The herds migrate for fresh grazing and water in an area of more than 1,300 miles.
December-March
In December, the populations of wildebeest begin to congregate preparing to give birth. In January and February the mass gives birth to approximately 350,000 calves in the Southern party of Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Area. This is because of natural soil and grass in the region (rich in calcium and phosphorous, potassium), a source for natural rich milk for nursing mothers.
April-June
By April the herds with many calves start to follow the Grumeti River west and pass Central Serengeti.
July-September
Herds are moving towards the North of Serengeti. After they reach there, they travel further to cross the Mara River before moving forward to cross the plains of the Northwest.
This is a good period to see the crossing. Crossing the river cause a major challenge for the migrating animals, because the river water level is low and many crocodiles are waiting to catch the herds.
If you are lucky, you might see a minimum of four high-crossings drama in a single day.
October-November
During this time herds go back towards the Serengeti from Maasai Mara.
