Selous Game Reserve
Selous is the largest game reserve, and the second largest conservation area in Africa. It has been declared by UNESCO as World Heritage. It has hot volcanic springs, sporadic lakes and channels from the nearby rivers such as the Great Ruaha and Rufiji rivers with diverse landscape. The big herds of Tanzanian elephants are attracted by the River Rufiji that flows through the reserve. Very popular activity is a boat trip along the Rufiji River.
In addition, Selous is host to over 350 species of birds and reptiles. Species of plants accounts for about 2,000 species as well as a wide range of wildlife. Selous also has a vast range of game including brindled gnu, Nyasaland gnu, sable antelope, elk, greater kudu, waterbuck, hartebeest, zebras, giraffe, reedbuck, warthog, spotted hyena, lion, leopard, hunting dog and largest populations of buffalos in Africa.
Mikumi National Park
Mikumi NP consists of two different parts, wooded savannah in the South, separated by the road from Dar-es-Salaam to Iringa and open plains in the North. It is the fourth largest national park in Tanzania. The North West of the park is a plain of the Mkata River with mainly savannah with acacias, baobabs and Tamarind vegetation. In the South West of the park is rock formations.
In this park you will encounter wildebeest, elk, zebras, warthog, yellow baboon, velvet monkey, spotted hyenas, lions, impalas, giraffe and many colourful birds.
Ruaha National Park
Ruaha NP is part of a large ecosystem, which includes the Rungwa Game Reserve and Usangu Game Reserve. The name of the park comes from the Great Ruaha River that flows through the park and is the most important river in the park. The park is best known for its large population of elephants and other animals like African wild dog and the sable antelope. In addition, Ruaha is a true paradise for the bird’s lover. There are more than 450 species identified, for example various hornbills, kingfishers and honeycombs.
Udzungwa National Park
The Udzungwa is a beautiful mountain ridge with a large primary rain forest. From Kenya to Malawi a series of mountain ranges run jointly through Tanzania. Collectively they are called the ‘Eastern Arc Mountains’. With a tour guide you will be able to go hiking through the mountains. You will also encounter many birds, reptiles and monkeys which are not found anywhere else in the world, such as the Udzungwa pigmeek chameleon, the Iringa rhubarb monkey and the Udzungwa red-winged honeycomb. The walk to the Sanje waterfall will provide you with amazing views!
